What are Tasks?

Prev Next

Tasks are where the "human-in-the-loop" part of our solution is implemented. The system generates Supervision (or "Extraction Supervision") tasks when it is not confident in its classification, identification, or classification results, and it creates Quality Assurance (or "Quality Assurance Supervision") tasks to help it assess and improve the accuracy of its output.

To learn more about these tasks, see our What is Extraction Supervision? and What is Quality Assurance? articles.

How tasks are counted

We count Supervision and Quality Assurance tasks at the submission or document level, depending on the type of task.

  • Document Classification — All classification completed for a submission counts as a single task, regardless of how many pages or documents the submission contains.

  • Identification — All Identification tasks for a document, whether they're Field ID or Table ID, count as a single Identification task. For example, if a keyer needs to identify 10 fields and 2 tables in a document as part of Supervision, the system only generates one Identification Supervision task for that document, not 12.

  • Transcription — Similar to Identification tasks, all Transcription tasks for a document count as a single Transcription task, no matter how many fields or tables a keyer transcribes for that document.

The system counts Supervision tasks as separate from Quality Assurance tasks, even if both Supervision and Quality Assurance tasks of the same type (e.g., Transcription) are generated from a single document.

Completing tasks

Where you can complete tasks in Hyperscience depends on what kind of task you want to complete.

To learn more about completing Supervision tasks, see Completing Supervision Tasks.

If you want to complete Quality Assurance Tasks, go to Tasks > Perform Tasks, and in the Quality Assurance Tasks card, click Perform Tasks for the type of QA task you want to complete.

Managing tasks in Hyperscience

You can complete tasks for specific submissions or documents from the Submissions > Submissions and Submissions > Documents pages, respectively. However, the Tasks section of the application provides several tools to help you monitor and manage all of your instance's tasks.

The Tasks section of the application has three parts: Perform Tasks, Overview, and Task Queue.

Perform Tasks

The Perform Tasks tab is the first page shown to users upon logging in to Hyperscience and can be accessed at any point by navigating to Tasks > Perform Tasks. This tab displays the Supervision tasks to perform by type. To return to the Perform Tasks tab from another page, click the Hyperscience logo in the upper-left corner of the application.

To learn more about the Perform Tasks tab, see Perform Tasks Tab.

Tasks Overview

The Overview tab within the Tasks section of the application summarizes the current and most recent processing load. You can access the Overview tab by navigating to Tasks > Overview.

For more information on all the cards in the Tasks Overview, see Tasks Overview Tab.

Task Queue

The Task Queue lists all submissions with outstanding work. This allows Data Keyer Admins and other users responsible for overseeing the completion of work in Hyperscience to understand how much work is outstanding, whether the outstanding tasks require manual or machine work, and the order in which outstanding work will be completed.

The Task Queue also allows users to move individual tasks to the top or bottom of the queue, search for outstanding tasks from particular submissions, and complete specific tasks.

You can access the Task Queue by navigating to Tasks > Task Queue.

To learn more about the Task Queue, see Navigating the Task Queue.
